Orthodontics Melbourne

Orthodontics is the practice that helps correct abnormalities of the teeth and jaw and enhances the appearance of your smile. The practice involves diagnosis, prevention, and correction of crooked teeth; overcrowding; malocclusions, such as overbites, underbites, openbites, and crossbites; and malpositioned jaws. Orthodontic treatment and care involve devices – such as braces, retainers, aligners, space maintainers, palatal expanders, and headgear – that help the teeth and jaws function normally, prevent other dental problems, and improve confidence and overall health.

Orthodontics can be used to treat:

Orthodontic treatment is not only about cosmetic enhancement. Having straight teeth and a correct bite actually helps keep teeth and gums stronger and healthier. Crooked teeth and other structural abnormalities make cleaning more difficult, increasing the risk for plaque buildup, cavities, tooth decay, and periodontal disease which, in turn, can cause chewing difficulties, TMJ syndrome or teeth grinding, headaches, and pain in the neck, shoulder, and back. These conditions can be easily prevented when said abnormalities are corrected through orthodontics.

Orthodontics can be used to treat:

  • Overbite, sometimes called “buck teeth”
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Open bite
  • Misplaced midline
  • Spacing
  • Crowding
  • Difficulty in Chewing or Swallowing

How Orthodontics Work

We use diagnostic tools to determine if you need orthodontic treatment and what kind of treatment plan will work best for you. These diagnostic tools include: a full medical and dental health history, a dental exam, plaster models of your teeth, and special X-rays and photographs.

Orthodontic treatment mainly involves the use of either fixed or removable appliances which put gentle pressure on the teeth and jaws. The type of appliance and length of treatment will depend on the type and severity of your condition. On average, a treatment can last from one to two years.

Types of Orthodontics Braces

Fixed appliances include:
  • Braces, which can be used for both children and adults;
  • Special fixed appliances for babies and toddlers;
  • Fixed space maintainers for babies and toddlers.
Removable appliances include:
  • Aligners, an alternative to braces for adults;
  • Removable space maintainers;
  • Jaw repositioning appliances, or splints, which are usually used for TMJ syndrome;
  • Palatal expanders;
  • Removable retainers;
  • Headgear

At BlueSpa Dental, we use the most advanced orthodontic appliances designed to provide optimum comfort and enable the patient to get used to their appliance in a relatively short time. In addition, we understand that patients want to look their best even while wearing their appliance; to ensure this, we consult with them and explain to them their options, so they can make a better-informed decision with regards to the type of orthodontic treatment they prefer.

Periodical Adjustment

Over the course of orthodontic treatment, the appliance typically needs to be adjusted periodically. The correction is done gradually and allowed a certain period to take hold.

The frequency of those periodical checks and adjustments relies on the speed at which the teeth are correcting or re-positioning. The adjustment process involves adjusting the tension — fastening or tightening — of the appliance to maintain the required pressure on the teeth. In some cases, adjusting the appliance may require disengaging or removing it. Neglecting the periodical check-ups and adjustments can render the appliance ineffective, which often results in the treatment period taking longer than normal.

Children and teens are the most ideal candidates for orthodontics as their teeth are still easy to manipulate so that any corrections needed would also be easier.

Ignoring Misaligned Teeth and Jaw

Ignoring any structural abnormality in your teeth and jaw can cause more complex and long-term dental problems, including difficulty eating, teeth grinding, chronic headaches and jaw pain, and periodontal disease. It is important to address any condition as early as possible to prevent associated risks and make treatment easier.
